There is a certain mystique in blue cocktails that draws you in and gets the taste buds salivating. The blue lagoon margarita is one of those tempting beverages and the easy tequila cocktail does not disappoint.

This blue margarita recipe is one of the few that comes with a sparkling twist. A splash of lemon-lime soda (e.g., 7-Up, Sprite, etc.) gives it a lively kick that's quite the surprise. The rest of the cocktail is made up of the orange-flavored blue curaçao and lime and pineapple juices. The blue and yellow-orange ingredients combine to create an aquamarine-like color that's just a little murky but still beautiful.

Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 ounces tequila

  • 3/4 ounce blue curaçao liqueur

  • 1/2 ounce pineapple juice

  • 1 splash lime juice

  • 1 splash lemon-lime soda

  • 1 lime wedge, optional

Tips

  • Choose a good tequila for this drink, preferably a blanco tequila.
  • Match that quality with a premium blue curaçao for the best margarita. Marie Brizard and Bols make excellent and affordable options.
  • The easiest way to add a splash of lime juice is to squeeze a lime wedge into the shaker.
  • As with any shaken pineapple juice cocktail, this will get a little foamy on top but it will settle in the glass.

Recipe Variations

  • Blend this margarita if you like. Simply combine all the ingredients, except the soda, in a blender with 1 cup of ice (about 5 cubes). Blend until smooth and pour into a tall glass, finishing up with a splash of soda.
  • Rim the glass with sugar or salt. Blue-colored sugar is a fun addition, too.
  • Double up on the pineapple and curaçao and add more soda, then serve this drink in a taller glass over ice (perfect for mason jar glasses). Not only will your margarita last longer, but it will also be gentler. Depending on how much soda you pour, the alcohol content can be cut in half.
  • Add a hint of coconut by pouring 1/2 ounce of coconut rum or vodka, or cream of coconut.
  • No blue curaçao? Pour another orange liqueur instead. Though orange curaçao, triple sec, or liqueurs like Grand Marnier won't produce the blue color, the drink will taste the same.

How Strong Is a Blue Lagoon Margarita?

Like most shaken margaritas, this is a strong drink. When made with the average liquors, its alcohol content will fall somewhere around 24 percent ABV (48 proof). To put it into perspective, two of these equals one straight shot of tequila.
