What can you do with a bottle of coconut vodka? Make a tropical vodka martini, of course! The coco light martini is a fabulous recipe made of coconut vodka, coconut water, and pineapple and lime juices. It's a delicious cocktail and much lighter than the average coconut martini.
Cîroc Vodka created this cocktail to feature its coconut vodka (one of the best of this flavor). While many coconut martinis use cream of coconut, this recipe opts for coconut water to create a lower-calorie cocktail. Adding pineapple juice brings a piña colada-like flavor, resulting in a refreshingly light martini that's perfect for hot summer days.
Ingredients
-
1 1/2 ounces coconut vodka
-
1 1/2 ounces unsweetened coconut water
-
1 ounce pineapple juice
-
1/4 ounce lime juice, freshly squeezed
-
Lime twist, for garnish
Steps to Make It
-
Gather the ingredients.
-
In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, pour the coconut vodka, coconut water, pineapple juice, and lime juice.
-
Shake well.
-
Strain into a chilled coupe glass.
-
Garnish with a lime twist. Serve and enjoy.
Tips
- Fresh juices are going to make a superior martini. For the pineapple, use a juicer or simply muddle a few chunks of the fruit, then strain out the juice.
- Limes are much easier, and the average lime yields between 1/2 and 1 ounce. Generally, you can simply squeeze one lime half directly into the shaker.
- Coconut water comes from young, green coconuts. If you have access to them, harvest the water for the freshest drink.
- Bottled coconut water is easy to find among sports drinks.
Recipe Variations
- Shaking pineapple juice creates a luscious foam on top of the drink. It's the perfect venue for a little extra decoration. Drop a few dashes of bitters onto it, then gently swirl the color into the foam. Try fruit bitters, such as orange or grapefruit.
- If you prefer, use coconut milk instead of water.
- Add an extra layer of fruit by muddling strawberries or raspberries in the shaker before adding the other ingredients and ice. This is a great option if you're also muddling pineapple for its juice.
How Strong Is a Coco Light Martini?
Most flavored vodkas are 70 proof, which is a little lighter than standard vodka. Since it is the only alcohol in the recipe, you can expect it to have a low alcohol content and fall somewhere in the 11 percent ABV (22 proof) range. That makes this one of the lowest-proof martinis you can mix up and more along the lines of a vodka tonic.
Does coconut vodka have sugar?
Regular vodka is naturally sugar-free, but coconut vodka may include sugar. It varies by brand and depends on the ingredients added to obtain the flavor. Coconut contains natural sugars, and coconut vodkas that do have sugar tend to contain between 2 and 7 grams per 1 1/2-ounce shot. Most flavored vodka producers do not disclose nutrition info or ingredients, though you can contact a company to inquire about a product. When in doubt, pour an unflavored vodka instead.
Can you make coconut vodka at home?
Homemade coconut vodka is as easy as any other vodka infusion: Combine about 1/2 cup of unsweetened coconut chips or flakes and 750 milliliters of vodka in a quart-sized jar (or larger). Keep sealed and shake daily, infusing for about four days or until it reaches your desired flavor intensity. Strain out the coconut and store it like any other vodka.
