Editor’s Note: We originally published our review of the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle in 2021. As part of our testing process, we periodically revisit previous product recommendations to make sure they’re still up to our standards. We stand by our recommendation of this Stagg model and it remains one of our favorite electric tea kettles.
We purchased the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle so our reviewer could put it to the test. Keep reading for the full product review.
For pour-over coffee fans, the gooseneck kettle can be pretty life-changing in terms of improving your cup of coffee. The long neck gives you more control over your water flow compared to a regular kettle. This ultimately helps you to extract the best flavors from your coffee grounds, which results in a better-tasting cup of coffee. One of the highest-rated gooseneck kettles is the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle. I tested this kettle’s design, setup, cleanup, extra features, and price. Keep reading to see what we thought.
Design: Excels in ergonomics and convenience
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle was designed with the user in mind. It includes an electric base, kettle, and removable lid. One minor design flaw is that this kettle has a rather short cord, measuring 2.5 feet, so I always had to keep it close to an outlet. This really wasn’t a huge deal because the kettle is small (11.5 x 6.75 x 8 inches), so it wasn’t too hard to make a space for it near an outlet. There’s a round button on the electric base’s right side. It's both a knob (to adjust temperature) and a button (to turn it on and off). There's also an LCD on the left side of the base that shows the temperature. I found that the LCD looked really sleek, and it’s easily readable since it illuminates when in use.
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle is the perfect kettle for brewing pour-over coffee.
There are two small toggle buttons on the back of the base. One is to change the temperature reading between Fahrenheit and Celsius. The other is the "hold" toggle, which gives the user the option to hold the set temperature for up to 60 minutes. I loved this feature because I could keep a consistent temperature for the entire coffee-making process.
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle also excels in ergonomics. There's a comfortable spot designed for the thumb to rest right above the handle. I loved this design aspect because it made it easier to hold onto the kettle when pouring hot water. In addition, the handle is counterbalanced, meaning that it's weighted, so it shifts the center of mass closer to your hand for an easier pour.
Material: Stylish and heavy-duty
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle is a work of art. The kettle, lid, and base are all one solid color, and I have it in matte black. I found this version to be so simple and sleek. It stands out in a good way in my kitchen. There are several other color varieties available, too, including polished steel, polished copper, matte white, matte black and maple, matte black and walnut, and warm pink and maple.
In terms of construction, this kettle is made of high-grade 304 18/8 stainless steel. I found that this material made it feel sturdy and well-built. It also weighs just 2.7 pounds, which was a comfortable weight for pouring. The only downside with this material is that the exterior of the kettle and lid get really hot when the kettle is heating water. I had to be extra careful not to touch the outside of the kettle when in use.
Setup: Quick and intuitive
Before the first use, the manual advises rinsing the kettle’s interior briefly and then boiling a small amount of water to 212 degrees Fahrenheit. It just needs to boil for about a minute, and then the water can be discarded. After that, the kettle is ready to be used as normal. This setup process was fast, especially since it only took about two minutes for the water to boil.
In terms of using this kettle, I found it to be a piece of cake since there's only one button to work with and the LCD is easily readable. I filled the kettle with water, making sure not to add beyond the maximum fill line (30 ounces), put the lid on, placed it on the base, and turned it on by pressing the button on the base. I adjusted the temperature by turning the knob, and then the kettle does the rest of the work. To turn it off, just press the round button again.
Performance: Convenient features for making pour-over coffee
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle is the perfect kettle for brewing pour-over coffee. First of all, this kettle heats up water very quickly. On average, I found that it took only about five minutes or less to reach boiling status when filled to its full capacity. Additionally, it has several convenient features that make it ideal for using to brew pour-over coffee.
The gooseneck in particular is one of its best features. This is hands down the most precise pour spout I’ve ever used. It was incredible how well I was able to control the water flow rate and direction of the water with this pour spout. Also, this kettle allows the user to control the temperature by single digits. I really loved this feature because I could choose the exact temperature I wanted without any guesswork. Another great feature for pour-over brewing is the stopwatch. If you press the main button down for about three seconds, the timer will initiate, allowing the user to time their brew.
In terms of capacity, it holds 30 ounces. This isn't a lot of water and probably wouldn’t suffice for larger families, but since I have a household of two, this was enough for us. I was able to make up to 4 cups of coffee at a time. Another downside to this kettle is that it doesn't beep to indicate that the water has reached the user’s set temperature. I had to keep an eye on the LCD to monitor this.
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle is worth the investment if you’re an avid pour-over coffee fan. The precise pour spout, exact temperature selection capabilities, and unequaled design make it worth it for specialty coffee lovers.
Besides coffee, I also made tea with this kettle, and I wasn't very pleased. Because of the pour spout, the water comes out very slowly. I tried to speed up the water flow by angling the kettle, but that only caused hot water to spill out of the top of the lid’s vent holes. I would say this kettle is strictly for making coffee.
Cleaning: Wash and dry by hand after use
After using the kettle, the interior should be washed with soapy, warm water. It should never be immersed entirely in water, as this could damage it permanently. The exterior should also be wiped with a damp cloth or sponge and then dried. Overall, I found the cleaning process to be very standard and easy to manage.
Price: Expensive
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle is on the more expensive side for an electric kettle. Retailing for around $149, this kettle is quite an investment. However, if you know someone who is very into pour-over coffee, it’s totally worth it in exchange for the conveniences it offers.
Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle vs. Cosori Kettle
COSORI Original Electric Gooseneck Kettle: The COSORI Original Electric Gooseneck Kettle is a similarly designed kettle in terms of both size and features. The COSORI has several buttons on the bottom of the base for five different preset temperatures. There's also a hold button, which keeps the water at its set temperature for 60 minutes, just like the Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle.
The major difference between the two is price and the pour spout. The COSORI costs around $70, which is significantly less than the Fellow. However, the Fellow offers a lot more control when it comes to its pour spout, as well as exact temperature setting capabilities. Ultimately, it comes down to what features you’re looking to get out of a kettle.
Buy if you’re an avid pour-over coffee drinker.
The Fellow Stagg EKG Electric Kettle is worth the investment if you’re an avid pour-over coffee fan. The precise pour spout, exact temperature selection capabilities, and unequaled design make it worth it for specialty coffee lovers. However, if using it for tea and other purposes, there are better-suited options out there for a much lower cost.
